St. John’s Community Care will host two Powerful Tools for Caregiverscourses beginning in August. Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a national evidence-based program that provides caregivers with the tools they need to take care of themselves. The six-week course is free of charge for people living in the St. Louis area who are caring for someone with a chronic condition age 60 and over.
Participating in Powerful Tools for Caregivers reduces stress and improves caregivers’ self-confidence. Caregivers learn how to communicate better with those they care for, make tough decisions about their care, and locate helpful resources. Powerful Tools for Caregivers meets the highest-level criteria of evidence-based disease prevention and health promotion programs. The Iowa State University of Science and Technology owns and managed the nationwide program.
Two experienced Class Leaders, Ray Gallaher and Joan Garner, will conduct the series at St. John’s Community Care – one on Zoom and the other in-person. Interactive lessons, discussions, and brainstorming will help caregivers choose tools to put into action in their day-to-day lives.
Classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays several times a year. In August, the classes will be offered on
- Tuesdays on Zoom from 6:00-7:30 p.m. beginning August 5.
- Thursdays in person from 1:30-3:00 p.m. beginning August 7.
There are no fees to register for the class, and participants will receive a free book, The Caregiver Helpbook. Class size is limited, and pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, contact Ray Gallaher at 224-220-9258 or rgallaher@stjohnscc.org.
